My to read/listen/review list for the next few weeks

Hi guys and gals, just thought I’d post up a little ‘what’s to come’ post to advertise some of the cool books/audiobooks/graphic novels I’m reading and listening to over the coming weeks. Always looking for inspiration on what to dive into next, so feel free to post what’s on your list.

Reading:

Armored Saint

The Armored Saint by Myke Cole:

“In a world where any act of magic could open a portal to hell, the Order insures that no wizard will live to summon devils, and will kill as many innocent people as they must to prevent that greater horror. After witnessing a horrendous slaughter, the village girl Heloise opposes the Order, and risks bringing their wrath down on herself, her family, and her village.”

Beyond Night

Beyond Night by Eric S. Brown & Steven L. Shrewsbury:

This one is probably one of my all time favourite bits of cover art.

Beyond Night is a Dark Fantasy Horror novel that pulls back the veil of nearly two thousand years of jaded history. Come trod in the bloody footprints left by monsters, soldiers and wizards and behold what lies hidden Beyond Night itself.

It’s Bigfoot War mixed with Lovecraftian horror on the edge of the Roman Empire.

How could Rome lose a Legion? What could’ve happened to blot out the existence of over five thousand men not only from history but the Earth itself?

As the Legion moves north to engage the forces of Pictdom, a dark horror emerges from the bowels of the Earth. Thought to be random attacks by hulking monsters, Decurion August soon learns a dire truth, that these bloody events are directed by opposing the wizards of the Picts. While one side assembles all tribes in a confederated army to battle the Legion, the other pulls these Greyman beasts from the depths of the Earth.

August fights not only these creatures and workers of magicks, but internal passions in the Legion itself.

Can he discover a way to survive the enormous bloodletting about to take place that will only serve to satisfy the wizards of Pictdom?”

Assassin's Creed Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag by Oliver Bowden:

Assassin’s Creed is my all time favourite series. After the disappointment of the first book, I am hoping this one is better.

“It’s the Golden Age of Piracy – a time when greed, ambition and corruption overcome all loyalties – and a brash young captain, Edward Kenway, is making his name known for being one of the greatest pirates of his day.

In the brilliant new novel, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, discover the story of how Edward, a young privateer, became one of the world’s most deadly pirates and was drawn into the centuries-old battle between the Templars and the Assassins.”

What Immortal Hand

What Immortal Hand by Johnny Worthen:

“Michael is called of God; just not that God.

What begins as a routine investigation of a hijacked truck turns into a desperate and personal quest for memories, faith, and meaning. The answers to these, for Michael Oswald, like the strangled cries of a thousand murdered travelers, is found in the dark heart of an ancient cult of killers.

Literary and dark, What Immortal Hand is a road trip across American wastelands and into the depths of spiritual darkness, where the Dark Mother, Kali, has set up house in the New World, and her children, the Thuggee cult of ancient India, are alive and thriving.”

Audio books:

Children of Time

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky:

“Adrian Tchaikovksy’s critically acclaimed stand-alone novel Children of Time is the epic story of humanity’s battle for survival on a terraformed planet.

Who will inherit this new Earth?

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age – a world terraformed and prepared for human life.

But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind’s worst nightmare.

Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?”

Ghostly Tales

Ghostly Tales by Charles Dickens, E. F Benson and more:

“The days are getting colder, the nights are getting longer, and as Christmas approaches the time is high for some ghostly tales. As an exclusive gift for Audible members, settle down, snuggle up and listen to four chilling ghost stories, read by Simon Callow. Four great stories, one master storyteller – what could be simpler than that?

Also featuring Sally Phillips, John Banks and Dan Starkey, this exclusive recording includes ‘Between the Lights’ by E.F. Benson, ‘A Strange Christmas Game’ by J.H. Riddell, ‘Was It an Illusion’ by Emelia B. Edwards and ‘The Signalman’ by Charles Dickens.”

Blackwing

Blackwing by Ed McDonald:

“The republic faces annihilation, despite the vigilance of Galharrow’s Blackwings. When a raven tattoo rips itself from his arm to deliver a desperate message, Galharrow and a mysterious noblewoman must investigate a long dead sorcerer’s legacy. But there is a conspiracy within the citadel: traitors, flesh-eaters and the ghosts of the wastelands seek to destroy them, but if they cannot solve the ancient wizard’s paradox, the Deep Kings will walk the earth again, and all will be lost.

The war with the Eastern Empire ended in stalemate some 80 years ago thanks to Nall’s Engine, a wizard-crafted weapon so powerful even the Deep Kings feared it. The strike of the engine created the Misery – a wasteland full of ghosts and corrupted magic that now forms a no-man’s-land along the frontier. But when Galharrow investigates a frontier fortress, he discovers complacency bordering on treason: then the walls are stormed, and the engine fails to launch.

Galharrow escapes only because of the preternatural magical power of the noblewoman he was supposed to be protecting. Together they race to the capital to unmask the traitors and restore the republic’s defences. Far across the Misery, a vast army is on the move, as the empire prepares to call the republic’s bluff.”

Graphic Novels:

Resident Evil vol 1

Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire vol 1 by Naoki Serizawa:

“At the prestigious and elite Marhawa High School in Singapore, a female student suffers a horrifying transformation. Called in to investigate, Professor Doug Wright and his nephew Ricky find themselves caught up in a deadly and growing tragedy. As things get rapidly out of hand, Chris Redfield and his team from the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance arrive on the scene, while behind it all a mysterious figure looms.”

Resident Evil Vol 2

Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire vol 2 by Naoki Serizawa:

“Professor Wright and his nephew Ricky continue their investigation of the biohazard outbreak at the Marhawa school. As the number of victims grows, the hooded woman finally appears. Her identity may now be known, but the situation takes a grim turn for the worse For mature audiences.”

    1. The Armored Saint review (I am writing as we speak) will be posted tomorrow. The Resident Evil Graphic Novels do look awesome. I have volumes 1-5 but didn’t want to read the blurbs past book 2 in case I spoiled something for myself haha.

    1. I’m part way through Blackwing but just not getting a lot of listening time in recently as I have been addicted to the Critical Role Pod Casts.

Armoured Saint review is getting posted tomorrow at 4pm (making use of the schedlued post option). Really enjoyed it. Good quick read.

    1. Crystal Lake are a publisher out of South Africa. They put out some high quality horror/dark works. Beyond Night is a fantasy set in Britain when the Romans were marching through and the natives, not wanting them there, turned to their druid magics to have bigfoot-like creatures aid them. It’s good so far, I am 40 % in. Fell in love with the cover. That reflection in the helmet 😊

I’ve had a fair few ARCs from Crystal Lake. Always good stuff.

  1. Blackwing was soooo good! Those are definitely some really great books you’re reading through though. I’ve played the first couple of AC games (till brotherhood I think) and then had to stop cause I felt Ubisoft were just hardcore milking the series. The recent did spark some interest in me with the Egyptian setting though hahah Hope the books are good! 😀
