Hi All,
I know I’m a tad late to the Halloween party (I’ve been pretty sick over the last few days so haven’t been online a great deal) but, as the title suggests, I’m really hungering for some good spooky horror.
I was just curious if any of you remembered reading anything that really gave you shivers and had you on edge even after finishing. I remember enjoying ‘The Secret of Crickley Hall’ and would love for something similar or even more creepy. Whether it’s a mainstream author or an indie one that has little to no exposure, if they can get my heart racing and make me fear the dark, they are the folk for me.
Any suggestions welcomed 🙂
Have you read any Joe Hill?

I haven’t. Any seriously spooky suggestions from mini-King?

There’s some good stuff in his new collection (Full Throttle). In terms of the novels, I think Heart Shaped Box is the creepiest, Horns is the most disturbing, and NOS4A2 is the best. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Fireman.

Now … do I go for the creepiest or the best?

I guess it depends on the mood you’re in. I usually recommend publication order, because I’m a nerd who likes to watch an author develop, but if you aren’t sure you’re going to read more than one…it’s a tough call.

That’s not a bad call.
I have just had an author off me some cosmic horror as well. So I think my spooky reading will be good in the coming month.

There was this lovecraft short that featured a thunderstorm once, freaked me out a little because it thundered while i read it. Cant remember the title tho

Lovecraft and I don’t get on 🙈 that being said, I have enjoyed a few of his works. The man had great ideas. Way ahead of his time in that respect.

The first title that comes to mind, among my more recent reads, would be KILL CREEK by Scott Thomas: a haunted house story that’s all but conventional… 🙂

I’ll hop on over to good reads and check it out. Thank you 😊

Just went to buy it, but it doesn’t appear to have an English kindle option 🙁

That’s too bad… Is there no way for you to read in .epub format?

I only read off my kindle. It’s the only screen I enjoy.
I’ll just keep checking it out. Its on kindle in Germany and Italy. May get bumped to English soon.

I don’t read much horror so can’t recommend any horror books but, The Chalk Man and The Taking of Annie Thorne are both brilliant and creepy reads and so are the Six Stories series (Six Stories, Hydra, Changeling) by Matt Wesolowski too.

Heard good things from you and Lis about Six Stories. And I’ve nearly picked the Chalk Man up on multiple occassions.

I just finished House of Leaves, and while parts of it gave me nightmares, a lot of it was a slog, unfortunately. If you pick it up and just read the found footage parts it could be fun. I wish someone would make an abridged version with just that.
Anyway- I’ll think on this a bit today and see what I come up with. Glad you are feeling better!

Oh! I’m listening to Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain now and really loving it! I don’t know that it’s the scariest I’ve ever read but I know you like audio and this one is good (the narrator is wonderful).

Will do. Just started The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. So may be a while.

Hmm might give it a miss if it is a bit of a slog.
I have a couple lined up but always welcome more

I don’t blame you. I loved the parts that were good, but not so much the rest of it.
